Questions of the week
If the NFL played by the Arena League rules on a 50-yard field, which team would suffer the most?
New England Patriots: The Pats love to spread the field and use Wes Welker underneath to open up Randy Moss deep. Unfortunately, Moss becomes a lot easier to cover on a short field and New England’s “spread” offense would be condensed in a big way.
Kansas City Chiefs: The Arena league is all about passing. The foundation of KC’s pathetic offense is the running game. Shrinking the field negates any effectiveness that Larry Johnson has, and it forces Brodie Croyle to toss the ball all over the field to the likes of Dwayne Bowe, Eddie Kennison, and any other Chiefs receiver that you can name off the top of your head.
Pittsburgh Steelers: The Steelers success stems from defense and running the ball. Unfortunately in the Arena league, neither of those things exists. The team would need to change its entire philosophy, but with Hines Ward, Santonio Holmes, and Heath Miller on the outside, it shouldn’t take too much of a hit.
Miami Dolphins: Granted, they were 1-15 so its not like they can get much worse, but by taking Ronnie Brown out of the equation, all the burden falls on the incapable shoulders of John Beck and Chad Henne. Oh yeah, and their stellar receiving corps of Greg Camarillo, Ted Ginn Jr., and Derek Hagan. Let’s just say this team might not even win the Arena League if it was the only NFL team in it.
The Verdict: The Chiefs. KC would likely become the second-worst team in the league or quite possibly the worst if Chad Henne turns out to be any good in Miami.
